The Borough of Naugatuck is compiling a list of living World War II veterans who live in Naugatuck. SAINT JOSEPH DAY DINNER DANCE

WINE TASTING

A wine and cheese tasting event to benefit the educational programs of the Naugatuck Historical Society will be held Saturday March 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Naugatuck Historical Society (NHS) Museum, 195 Water St., Naugatuck (the train station). NAUGATUCK EMBLEM CLUB 160

SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI AUCTION

Saint Francis of Assisi School 2009 Auction will take place on Saturday, April 4th at 6 p.m. at the Continental Room in Naugatuck. Tickets are $25 and include a buffet dinner and cash bar. MEATLESS SPAGHETTI DINNER

The Shepherd-Salem Lodge #78 A.F. & A.M. will be having its annual all you can eat meatless spaghetti dinner on April 10 (Good Friday) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Naugatuck Masonic Temple, located at 130 Church Street in Naugatuck. There will also be salad, Italian bread, coffee, tea, punch and dessert. Donation: $8 per adult; $3 for children ages 5-10; and free for children under 5.

 

NYC TRIP

The Saint Francis of Assisi Parish trip to New York City will be Saturday, April 25. We will be running a coach bus trip to New York City. The bus will leave the back, Parish parking lot on Meadow Street at 7:45 a.m. sharp and leave New York at 4:45 p.m. The bus is equipped with a bathroom and VCR/DVD player and will drop us at the theater district where you can purchase tickets to a show or simply enjoy the sites. LENTEN BAKERY

The St. Michaels’s Episcopal Church located at 210 Church St., Naugatuck is having a Lenten Bakery Friday mornings from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. starting Friday Feb. 27th through April 3rd . LENTEN FISH FRY

The Cup Ladies Auxiliary is having a Lenten Fish Fry Friday’s beginning at noon until sold out starting Friday Feb. 27. Additional dates include March 13, March 20, March 27, April 3 and April 10. The Lenten Fish Fry costs $12 and offers take out or eat in. The event will be located at Clube Uniao Portuguesa, upstairs in the main hall, at 110 Rubber Ave, Naugatuck.

The American Legion Post #17 and the Naugatuck Lions Club will be having a ziti dinner Thursday April 2 from 5-7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, located at 21 Cedar Street in Naugatuck. Donation: $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Knights of Columbus Ojeda Council 33 will be serving “Simple Soup” meals on Friday evenings during Lent at St. Mary’s Church, located at 338 North Main St. in Naugatuck from 5:30-6:45 p.m. on these Friday’s in Lent: March 13, 20, 27 and April 3. Meals won’t be served on Good Friday, April 10. Simple Soups will precede the weekly Stations of the Cross devotions at the church which begin at 7 p.m.

The Simple Soups will feature a variety of tasty, hot vegetarian soups. Meals will include freshly baked bread and hot coffee.

Everyone is welcome to attend. The requested donation is $4.50 per person. Proceeds from these meals will benefit Ojeda Council 33 and local charities supported by the council.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternal benefit society formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Members participate in educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

 

HOWARD WHITTEMORE LIBRARY

For the month of March the library will be surveying in-house and on-line at biblio.org/whittemore. The survey asks for your opinions about the type of reading material you enjoy, the evening hours the library is open versus Saturday hours, library services and there will be a space for your comments as well.

 

PLAY GROUP

Naugatuck Discovery and the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library will be hosting a parent group/play group for toddlers every Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s section of the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library, 243 Church St. All are welcome to attend. A Low Cholesterol Omelet Day will take place at the Naugatuck Senior Center, 300 Meadow Street, Naugatuck on Tuesday April 14 from 1-2 p.m. Join the Village at East Farm’s Chef Ron Pascoe as he discusses and demonstrates new low-cholesterol omelet cooking techniques. Complimentary samples will be served. This is a free health and wellness program.

A Health Screening will take place at the Naugatuck Senior Center on Wednesday April 15 from 9 a.m. – noon. If you are a senior citizen age 60 years or older, you may register to have the following health screenings, including podiatry and toe nail clipping, vision exam, dental and fall prevention exams. LENTEN FISH DINNER
Holy Saviour Polish National Catholic Church, 118 Prospect Street (route 68) is sponsoring a Lenten Fish Dinner on Saturday March 21. Dinner will be served from 5:00- 6:30 p.m.

COOKING AND CRAFT CLASSES

This class is open to children ages 3 to 13. Children may register for as many of the dates as desired. Classes are ongoing.

 

KARATE PROGRAM

The Naugatuck Park and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Karate Program Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Cross Street School. The class is in cooperation with USA Martial Arts. SCRAPBOOKING CROP

The Naugatuck YMCA will be holding a scrapbooking crop on Friday, April 3rd from 4:00pm-10:00pm. The cost of the event will be $15 for members and $20 for non-members. TEEBALL FOR TOTS

Teeball for Tots is back at the Naugatuck YMCA. Children 3-5 years old will learn the basics of baseball through drills and fun activities. The program will be held on Saturdays from 10:00am-11:00am or 11:00am-12:00pm. The program starts on May 2 and runs for 7 weeks. The cost of the program is $55 for members and $65 for non-members.

CLUB MID

A new program for middle school children will be held from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the YMCA. In addition to gym, swimming and quiet activities, the children will be able to use the new middle school workout room, which consists of Wii machines and exercise equipment. AQUA FIT

Aqua Fit is back at the Naugatuck YMCA. If you are new to exercise, want to tone without pain and get some aerobic conditioning, stop in and try Aqua Fit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The class is free to members. KIDROBICS

The Naugatuck YMCA will host Kidrobics, a class in which children ages 8 to 12 will learn simple aerobic steps to help build cardiovascular fitness, upper body and abdominal strength. KIDS YOGA

The Naugatuck YMCA will host a Kids Yoga class for children ages 3 to 7. Students will learn basic yoga poses and breathing techniques. GO, GIRL, GO!

The YMCA will be holding Go, Girl, Go! Tuesday nights from 5:45-6:30 p.m. This unique program developed by The Women’s Sports Foundation is designed for girls in grades 4-6. The educational segment will be led by Social Worker Tanya Miko and the physical segment by Joan Andrew, YMCA’s physical director. The fee is $50, plus a $15 material fee, which includes a Go, Girl, Go! Guide to Life and a scrapbook/journal. Call the YMCA at 729-9622.

 

BALLROOM BLITZ

A 16 week afterschool dance program will be held Tuesdays from Jan. 20 – May 5 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Students in grades 5-10 will learn the Fox Trot, Tango, Cha-Cha, Swing and Merengue. After 15 weeks of lessons, students will participate in a dance sport challenge – a ballroom dance competition – on the Palace Theater stage on May 21. The top three couples will receive six additional complimentary lessons at Arthur Murray Studio in Hamden, as well as a full sponsorship for their entries into a regional Arthur Murray Competition. The students will attend the National Broadway Touring Production of “The Pajama Game” at the Palace Theater on March 20. Bus transportation is provided. Sign up at the YMCA. Space is limited. MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCES

The Naugatuck YMCA will hold a Middle School dance on Saturday, April 25, from 7 to 10 p.m. The dances are open to all seventh and eighth-grade students. Tickets, which will be $6, will go on sale the Monday before the event at the YMCA. Students must present proof of age or grade when purchasing tickets. Glow sticks will be sold for $2 and snacks and drinks are free.

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL OPEN Y NIGHT

The Naugatuck YMCA will hold Intermediate School Open Y Nights on Saturday, March 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is open to fifth and sixth-grade students. Tickets, which will be $4 for program members and guests and $3 for full members, will be available to purchase the Monday before the event. Activities will include swimming, open gym, racquetball and a game room. Pizza will be available for $1 per slice. Snacks and drinks are free.

 

YOUTH IN ACTION

The Youth in Action Community Service Group for high school students will meet every Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This is a great way to meet the community service requirement for school. The first project will be the Annual YMCA Halloween Party.

 

MEDITATION MADE SIMPLE

Master Plum Thomas will begin his teaching of the ancient Chinese secrets of Tai Chi and Qigong at Balanced Body Wellness Center at 175 Church St. on Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with a six-week series of four-seasons Qigong. BACK CARE BASICS

Yoga for Chronic Back Pain is coming to Naugatuck.  Kathy Jones, who is certified in Yoga Therapy, is leading the course. The class is limited to 12 participants. The program is two, five-week series, beginning Wednesday evenings from Feb. 18-March 18 at 5:45pm. LUNCHEON PROGRAM

The Senior Center offers a full course, hot luncheon, Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. for ages 60 and older. The program is coordinated through New Opportunities, Inc. which plans a well-balanced, low-salt, sugar-free menu. Stop by the center for a monthly menu. A contribution of $2.50 is accepted. TAX ASSISTANCE

Bernie Grant, VITA volunteer, will begin assisting people with the filing of their 2008 IRS tax forms at the center. This is a free program that provides income tax preparation assistance for low and middle income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those 60 years of age and older. Taxpayers must bring all of the documents that have been received that apply to their 2008 income taxes. NAUGATUCK RETIRED MEN’S CLUB

The Naugatuck Retired Men’s Club is looking for new members. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Naugatuck Senior Center, located at 300 Meadow St. The group is for men who enjoy playing pool, playing cards and attending picnics and banquets. Retired men, aged 50 and over and any adult males retired because of disability, are asked to stop by the center any Wednesday morning between 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. and ask to talk to one of the club’s officers or other members. Annual dues are $4 but will be raised to $6 after Jan. 1.

PLAY GROUP

Play group will meet every Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. All welcome.

 

SATURDAY GAMING CLUB

Game Night will be held on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Those interested between the ages of 9-13, please register in the children’s department.

 

STORY TIMES

The following story times will now be running: Time for Twos, Tuesdays, 11 to 11:30 a.m. and Stories for Threes to Fives, Wednesdays, 11 to 11:30 a.m. Each story time runs for eight weeks. Age-appropriate sessions include books, fingerplays, songs and crafts. Only children of the specified age group are allowed to attend. No younger or older siblings are allowed. The Naugatuck Garden Club is looking for new members. The club meets on the third Thursday of every month at St. Michael’s Church at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in learning about gardening is invited to attend a meeting. CHILDREN’S FISHING DERBY

When: Sat., April 11. Where: Baumer’s Pond, Mill Street, Naugatuck. Time: 8 a.m. to noon. Any child between the ages of 1-16 is welcome to participate. Prizes will be awarded. Hot dogs, burgers, soda, coffee and hot chocolate will be available. This event is sponsored by the AFSCME 1303-12 and the Naugatuck Parks and Recreation Department. GOLF LESSONS

The Naugatuck Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring golf lessons during April at Hop Brook Golf Course.

Junior lessons (7-12) are Wednesdays April 22, 29, May 6 and 13 from 5:30 -6:30 p.m.

Adult basic lessons are Wednesdays April 22, 29, May 6 and 13 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

All classes are weather permitting. Fee is $60 for adults and $50 for juniors. Lessons are given by CT School of Golf’s Tom Keslow. To register, please call the Park Dept. at 720-7043 or 720-7044.

Beacon Falls

 

FAMILY SWIM

Prospect and Beacon Falls Parks and Recreation will be holding family swim (for Prospect and Beacon Falls residents only) at Woodland Regional High School on the following dates: now through March 28th on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m.-7:30p.m.

There will be an entrance fee of $2.00 per person/$5.00 per family. There are no floatation devices allowed in the pool. As well as the use of toys in the pool is prohibited.

Everyone is expected to clean up after themselves whether by the pool or in the locker rooms.

All participants must no longer require the use of diapers; dates are subject to change.

 

VEHICLE STICKERS

Stickers providing indication that the vehicle belongs to a Beacon Falls resident will now be available for purchase at both the resident trooper’s office at 119 North Main St. and the Town Clerk’s Office, Town Hall, 10 Maple Ave., during normal office hours. Stickers are to be used by residents for admittance to Matthies Park and use of the Town’s Lopus Road transfer station for bulky waste drop-off. Person applying for sticker must provide proof of residence (valid Connecticut Driver’s License or other photo ID). Cost is $2 per sticker. There is a $5 fee to replace a sticker. Stickers are good for one year and expire Aug. 1, 2009.

BEACON FALLS LIBRARY

Please join us on Thursday March 12 at 6:30 p.m. for a card making program where participants will learn how to make three beautiful handmade cards using Stampin’ Up materials. This program is for adults and teens 15 and up. The cost is $8.00. Payment is due upon registration and preregistration is required.

On Saturday March 21 the library will be hosting a Welcome Spring Craft. Children grades K-2 will be at 10:00 a.m. and children grades 3-6 will be at 11:30a.m. Registration is not required but is appreciated.

On Thursday March 26 at 6:30 p.m. the library will host the third Young Adult Book Discussion on the Twilight Series. This month we will be discussing Eclipse. Registration is not required but is appreciated.

PRESCHOOL STORY TIME

Special Spanish /English Story Time at the Beacon Falls Public Library will take place on Friday, March 27 at 10:30 a.m. During our preschool story time we will offer a special session where two farm animal stories will be shared in both Spanish and English. There will also be songs, finger plays and a craft activity. This program is designed to showcase bilingual books that were purchased for the United Valley Libraries with a grant provided by the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven. No registration is required.

 

SCRABBLE CHALLNGE FUNDRAISER

The Friends of Beacon Falls Library is hosting the first annual Letters for Our Library Scrabble Challenge fundraiser on March 26 at 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church, 25 Maple Ave, Beacon Falls. We challenge you to assemble a team and demonstrate its excellence. Enjoy a mental workout and light supper. $100-120 per team of four to six players. Active Singles, a non-profit group, sponsors hikes on the first and third Sunday of the month all over the state. There are no dues or fees to belong to Active Singles. SWIM TEAM

The Greater Waterbury YMCA is sponsoring a swim team for the children of Beacon Falls and Prospect. Any swimmer ages 6 to 18 are invited to join the Barracuda Swim Team, which will meet for practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at Woodland Regional High School. ACTING CLASS

The Beacon Falls Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsoring the following afterschool program at Laurel Ledge Elementary School: Acting class will take place on Tuesdays from Feb. 3- March 24. Class will be from 3:30- 4:15 p.m. for grades K-2 and 4:20 p.m. through 5:15 p.m. for grades 3-6. The cost of the class is $90.  The class will include theatre games, improvisational exercises, acting terms, voice, speech, stage skills and script work, with a performance concluding the session. USE OF PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITIES

Please note that 2009 applications for use of Park and Recreation facilities are now available at the Beacon Falls Town Hall. For all organizations that wish to reserve space for use of the Pent Road Recreation Fields during the spring sports season, the deadline for completing this application is Friday, March 13.

 

JUMPBUNCH

JumpBunch is a recreational sports program for children ages 18 months – 4 years, and is currently offering the following classes: Thursday 9:30 a.m. for toddlers, 10:30 a.m. for preschoolers, Friday 9:30 a.m. for ages 2-3, and Saturday 10:30 a.m. for a mixed-ages class. Children are introduced to sports and physical games in a non-competitive, fun environment at the 3-2-1-Fun Studio in the Beacon Falls Business Park on South Main St. Weekly one-hour sessions are $36 a month & enrollment is on-going. *Pre-registration for a free trial class is requested since space is limited in some sessions– please call or email for class availability: 203-720-0321 or debbi@jumpbunch.com.

GREEN ENGINEERING

Engineering meets alternative energy! This program examines how smart engineering design combined with the use of renewable energy sources such as wind, water and solar power. Children understand some of the environmental issues we face while providing them a fun and educational experience. This curriculum uses Lego Renewable Energy Lab kits and is designed to help students grasp the abstract and sometimes difficult concept of energy through captivating, hands-on activities. Building projects such as turbine windmill, solar car and more will bring these science concepts alive! Open to grades 3-5. DRAWING CLASS

Paint, Draw & More returns for another exciting session. Children learn to draw and illustrate using many mediums such as markers, watercolors, pencil and more. AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS

The following after school Technology classes are being held this fall at Laurel Ledge Elementary School:

Crazy Critter Club – This class will be open to children in kindergarten through second grade. Atlantic Salmon Project – This class will be open to children ages 7 to 12. They will construct a fish hatchery and raise Atlantic Salmon from the eyed-egg stage to fry. Sponsored by the CT River Salmon Association. The project will culminate with the release of the salmon. The class will be held Wednesdays from 3:20 to 4:20 p.m. until April 29. Cost for the class is $85.

CONSERVATION COMMISSION MEETINGS

The Beacon Falls Conservation Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall on the first Monday of every month. The schedule for 2009 is as follows: April 6, May 4, June 1, July 6, Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. The primary objective of the Conservation Commission is to make more areas readily available to all residents while maintaining a policy of sound and prudent development of the land. In addition, the commission keeps an index of all open areas, publicly or privately owned, including open marshlands, swamps and other wetlands, for the purpose of obtaining information on the proper use of such areas. The Ladies Auxiliary of Prospect Volunteer Fire Department are having their annual Easter Flower Sale on April 10 and 11 at the firehouse from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. On April 11, there will be “lunch with the Easter Bunny” from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Also, on April 11 there will be an Amber Alert sign-up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for all children 18 years and under. Lego Fungineering – Young budding engineers love this “hands – on, minds – on” program. Concepts of simple machines such as gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels are introduced through a series of activity – card LEGO building projects. CROCHETING MADE EASY

Eight-week class designed to teach the basic techniques and stitches for crocheting. Grades 3-6.

FENCING

It promotes physical and mental conditioning. Instructor Sandra Marchant, who took the gold in the women’s epee, silver in the women’s foil, silver in the men’s epee and bronze in mixed saber.

SING OUT LOUD

Always wanted to sing, love music, then this course is for you! Learn some basic singing and stage presence techniques centered around a “Disney theme” in a non-competitive, caring environment. The class will learn about four or five songs, give a short performance (about 30 minutes) for friends and parents at the last class. They will also learn what it takes to put a show together, including making a program, making any possible stage props needed and the importance of working as a team. Place: Meeting Place. TODDLER TIME

A parent/child interactive program designed to support social and motor skill development. The class will be one hour long and consist of open play time, a craft and a snack. Children with allergies will be asked to bring their own. Place: Meeting Place. Level: Ages 1-3. Day: Tuesday or Thursdays. Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Date: through March 24. ZUMBA

This program will be held on Saturdays from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. at the Prospect Grange Hall. It is open to anyone 14 years of age or older. Zumba is an up-and-coming new style of aerobics which incorporates Hip Salsa dancing and a cardiovascular workout. Cost is $60 for residents, $65 for non-residents.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Any men 18 or older can join this basketball league, which meets on Thursdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Long River Middle School from now until May. Participants must register as a team. A league for men over 35 will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. at Long River Middle School from now until May 20. EARLY LEARNERS

This class is a way to introduce children to a guided routine. It is open to children 3 to 5 years old and will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the fall from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. at the Prospect Meeting Place. Cost is $110 for residents and $115 for non-residents.

CAN AND BOTTLE DRIVE
